Introduction

1. Jawan (transl. Soldier) is an upcoming Indian Hindi-language action thriller film co-written and directed by Atlee, in his first Hindi film.
2. It stars Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, alongside Nayanthara, Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone (billed as a special appearance), Priyamani and Sanya Malhotra.
3. The music is composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
4. Principal photography commenced in September 2021 with filming taking place in Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai, Rajasthan and Aurangabad.
5. Jawan was initially planned to release on 2 June 2023, but was postponed due to post-production needing more work.
6.  It is now scheduled for theatrical release on 7 September 2023, coinciding with Janmashtami.

Premise

Jawan is about a soldier who sets out to avenge a personal vendetta against the government with the help of his gang of women.

Production

Development

In late 2019, it was rumored that Shah Rukh Khan would team up with Tamil film director Atlee and the project was confirmed in 2020. In May 2021, it was reported that the filming would commence soon.

Casting

Nayanthara was finalized as the female lead opposite Khan, thus marking her Hindi cinema debut. Priyamani, Sunil Grover, Sanya Malhotra and Yogi Babu later joined the cast. Babu joined with Khan after a decade, last he acted with Khan in Chennai Express. Rana Daggubati was offered the antagonist role but declined citing health issues and thus the role went to Vijay Sethupathi.Deepika Padukone joined the cast in August 2022 in Chennai to shoot her cameo.In September 2022, Thalapathy Vijay was confirmed to make a cameo in the film.In March 2023, Sanjay Dutt joined the cast to shoot an action-packed cameo.

Filming

 Principal photography commenced in September 2021 in Pune.Shah Rukh Khan and Nayanthara joined the 10–days shoot.Khan resumed the shoot in June 2022 in Hyderabad.Nayanthara joined the Mumbai schedule on 26 June 2022, after her marriage.Some family sequences were taken in this schedule. In August, next schedule started in Chennai, where Deepika Padukone shot her cameo part. Later Vijay Sethupathi joined the shoot. Some action sequences between Khan and Sethupathi were taken in this schedule. A song featuring Priyamani and Khan was also shot in this schedule, in jail.A month long Chennai schedule was wrapped on 7 October.Next schedule was held in Rajasthan, in October. Khan and Nayanthara joined this 20–days schedule. Next schedule was held in February 2023, where Khan shot some chase scenes.Sanjay Dutt joined the shoot on 20 March 2023,to shoot an action-packed cameo.Shooting wrapped in April 2023, with 2 songs, featuring Khan and Nayanthara, and the other one featuring Deepika Padukone for her cameo appearance.

Music

 R. Rahman was reportedly approached by director Atlee to compose for the film.Rahman subsequently declined the offer for reasons unknown, and Anirudh Ravichander was chosen to compose for the film, who would thus mark his debut as a solo composer in Bollywood, previously having composed a song for David and the background score of Jersey. The music rights were bagged by T-Series for ₹36 crore. The lyrics of the film are written by Kumaar and Irshad Kamil.

Marketing

The film's title, along with a video was released on 3 June 2022. Later the film got postponed and a new release date was announced through a motion poster released on 6 May 2023.An official preview was released on 10 July 2023.

Release

Jawan is scheduled for a theatrical release on 7 September 2023 in Hindi along with dubbed versions of Tamil and Telugu languages. Earlier the film was scheduled to release on 2 June 2023. Later in May 2023, it was reported that film is delayed to August 2023.The film was later reported to release on the original release date,However, later it was confirmed that the film will release on 7 September 2023. Red Giant Movies acquired the distribution rights for Tamil Nadu, while Sri Venkateswara Creations acquired the distribution rights for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.
