Brics Summit |
During the BRICS-Africa Outreach and BRICS Plus Dialogue held in South Africa's capital, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a thought-provoking perspective, highlighting that the Global South carries a historical narrative beyond just diplomatic terminology. He underscored that the shared history of these nations, united against the challenges of colonialism and apartheid, forms the foundation for reshaping modern international relations.
Expressing
gratitude to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for facilitating this
exchange among leaders from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, PM Modi emphasized
the focus on the priorities and concerns of Global South nations during the
summit's discussions over the past two days.
"We
believe that recognizing and elevating these concerns is imperative for the current
generation. Our collective decision to expand BRICS welcomes new partner
nations, representing another step toward enhancing the competitiveness of
global institutions and forums," stated PM Modi.
Reflecting
on Mahatma Gandhi's significant time in South Africa, PM Modi noted that it was
on this soil that Gandhi formulated and tested the principles of non-violence
and peaceful resistance, strategies integral to India's fight for independence.
Gandhi's ideals, he asserted, also profoundly inspired South African leader
Nelson Mandela.
PM Modi
reiterated India's view of the world as a global family and its ongoing efforts
to bring Global South concerns to the forefront. He drew attention to India's
core principle during its G20 presidency, inviting African nations and
developing countries as guest participants to address these concerns
collectively. Furthermore, PM Modi proposed the idea of granting permanent G20
membership to the African Union, asserting that both BRICS and other friendly
nations present possess the potential to fortify a multipolar world.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi congratulated Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE on becoming full members of BRICS, expressing India's unwavering support for the organization's expansion.
India's commitment to BRICS expansion is steadfast. We firmly believe that enlarging our community will only bolster BRICS' organizational strength," PM Modi stated in the presence of fellow BRICS leaders.
Highlighting India's profound historical ties with the new BRICS members, PM Modi underlined India's willingness to assist other countries seeking partnership within BRICS—comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
In summary,
Prime Minister Modi's discourse at the BRICS Summit brought into focus the
essence of Global South's historical solidarity and its pivotal role in shaping
contemporary international relations, while also reaffirming India's dedication
to the expansion and strengthening of BRICS as a global platform for
collaboration.
